Girls in Aviation Day at Stead Airport

August 2, 2024

The Sierra Battle Born Chapter of nWomen in Aviation has opened registration for its third annual Girls in Aviation Day event.

“The purpose of Girls in Aviation Day is to showcase and promote career fields and recreational pursuits within aviation to young women,” said Rachael Moore, who is spearheading the event. “Through a variety of speakers, exhibits, and hands-on learning, girls ages 8-18 will have the opportunity to meet and be inspired by women pilots, mechanics, air traffic controllers, aerospace engineers, and more.”

This year’s event will be held at Reno-Stead Airport’s Freedom Terminal from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21. The event is free but registration is required.

“Girls will see a variety of aircraft, including high-performance military jets, transport, helicopters, general aviation planes, and a hot air balloon,” Moore said. “They’ll also experience flight simulators, hands-on STEM activities, and have the chance to meet the first female TOP GUN pilot!”

During her career in the United States Air Force, Moore flew F-16 fighters in more than ten countries, and served as an instructor in pilot training. Now, she flies passenger jets for a major air carrier.

“As an airline pilot, I get to meet so many great people from all walks of life,” she said. “I love when kids want to see the flight deck and meet the pilots!”
